Waiting List Resources and FAQ
The Master Wait List for Affordable Housing Programs is now CLOSED.
The City of Santa Monica Housing Division received over 33,000 applications in 35 hours for the Master Wait List for all Affordable Housing Programs offered by the City including the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program. According to self-reported data from applicants, 3,919 of those who applied are Santa Monica residents, 173 of whom are veterans. While the City of Santa Monica’s website experienced some technical challenges, the Housing Division believes that 33,943 applicants is a more than adequate pool to make use of program funding. According to the Division’s policies and Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) regulations, closing the waiting list is permitted if there is an adequate pool of families to utilize the programs.

1. How can I check the status of my application? You may check the status of your application by logging onto www.waitlistcheck.com and inputting your social security number and your year of birth. Please note that confirmation of receipt of your application to SMHA does not mean you are automatically eligible for assistance. You may also check the status of your application by using the Internet Voice Response phone system by dialing 1-800-376-5058. Be prepared to enter your year of birth and social security number.
2. When I check my status at www.waitlistcheck.com, it shows my status as active/inactive. What does that mean? Active/Inactive status means that you are currently ON the Santa Monica Housing Authority's wait list. When your name reaches the top of the wait list, you will receive correspondence from SMHA at your address on record. Please make certain to notify SMHA of any income, family composition or address changes.
3. How do I inform the Santa Monica Housing Division of a change of address after submitting my application? You may notify the Santa Monica Housing Division of any changes to your address or eligibility status by submitting the information in writing to: Santa Monica Housing Division, 1901 Main Street, 1st Floor, Suite A, Santa Monica, CA 90405
4. How long will it take before I receive housing assistance? Unfortunately we are unable to determine the length of time you will have to wait before your name reaches the top of the list. Names are taken from the waiting list as those currently being assisted leave the program and new funds become available. New funds are not received on a regular basis and we do not know when funding will be available.
