Good Pilots, Fly Neighborly
There are no better pilots in the country than those who fly quietly for the neighborhoods surrounding
the Santa Monica Airport.
This section contains information for pilots who are new to SMO for the first time or those use the
airport everyday. Pilots should become familiar with all aspects of the Airport's Noise
Management Program and should read all
sections contained in "Pilot Outreach." Pilots are responsible for their knowledge of the Municipal "Noise" Code. -Thanks for Flying Neighborly!
Implementation of Ban on Category C & D Aircraft
On March 25, 2008 the Santa Monica City Council adopted an ordinance restricting aircraft operations at the
Santa Monica Municipal Airport (SMO) to aircraft designated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
as Category A and B aircraft. The Santa Monica Airport is designed to handle such aircraft,
which have approach speeds of less than 121 knots. Operations by Category C and D aircraft are prohibited
by the ordinance. The new ordinance will go into effect on April 24, 2008,
after which only aircraft in the FAA designated A & B categories will be allowed to operate at SMO.
On April 28, 2008 Judge George Wu of the United States District Court issued
a Temporary Restraining Order enjoining the City's enforcement of the
Ordinance until a hearing on the Preliminary Injunction is held on May 15,
2008. On May 16, 2008 the Court issued a Preliminary Injunction which
prevents the City from enforcing Santa Monica Municipal Code §10.04.06.220
and requires the City to permit the use of the Santa Monica Airport by
category C and D aircraft for the duration of the lawsuit.
