Get moving by checking out the following walking clubs and groups, organizations, health advocacy groups, local walking tours, health and nutrition information, and City sports facilities.  Note: The City of Santa Monica does not endorse any specific resource but provides this information to assist you in developing your 10,000 Steps walking program. 

 

Start off on the right foot

 

The Santa Monica Public Library has active living-related books, videos and DVDs waiting for you, all listed in the Active Living Brochure.

 

America On the Move  has everything you need to make simple changes for better health:
 
  • Active living features, including motivational articles to help you get moving
  • Healthy eating tips and meal planning
  • "Move Mates" — a fun way to offer and receive support from others
  • Goal setting — set health goals and keep notes on your progress throughout your America On the Move experience
  • On the Move e-newsletter — an every-other-month update on the latest in healthy eating and active living. www.americaonthemove.org
 
National Council on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) is an information center focused on physical activity and disability. Being physically active is good for every body. www.ncpad.org

Walking Groups & Clubs

Los Angeles Roadrunners  Official training program of the Los Angeles Marathon.  Group runs are held in Venice and Ventura. www.laroadrunners.com
 
Team in Training  Training program for the Los Angeles Marathon.  Weekly runs held in Pasadena.  www.teamintraining.org
 
The L.A. Leggers Training program for marathons as well as shorter runs and walks.  Based in Santa Monica, weekly runs held each Saturday. www.laleggers.com
 
Track Club of Los Angeles  Attracts the more experienced runners and walkers.  The groups meets at Santa Monica High School track for weekly training sessions and additional group runs throughout the week.  www.trackclubla.org
 
Los Angeles Frontrunners:  Walking and running club for gays and lesbians and their supporters.  Weekly runs held Tuesday through Thursday evenings throughout Los Angeles.  www.lafrontrunners.com
 
The Snail’s Pace Running Club  Various chapters in Pasadena, Laguna Hills, Fountain Valley and Brea.  Training sessions several days a week and races every month in addition to social events.  Annual dues. www.snailpace.org
 
The Los Angeles Running Club  The group includes runners and walkers, participating in races, social events, recreation and travel, as well as community outreach.  Meets weekly in Santa Monica. www.larunningclub.com
 
The Pasadena Pacers: Free running club that trains people of all levels to run 5Ks, 10Ks, half marathons and marathons.  Meets every Saturday. www.pasadenapacers.org
 

New Basin Blues Running Club  Loosely structured training program that meets in various locations such as Granada Hills, Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Encino.  Trail runs, distance runs, track workouts and social/charity events.  www.newbasinblues.org

 

Local Walking Tours

Share your 10,000 steps with others who share your interest in the history of architecture in Santa Monica and Los Angeles!

 

Santa Monica Conservancy Walking Tour  In just a few short blocks, the Third Street Historic District in the Ocean Park section of Santa Monica provides visitors a visual history lesson.  The neighborhood represents all the architectural styles that were popular in Santa Monica from 1875 through 1935.  The tour features visits to the interiors of historic Victorian and Craftsman homes and highlights the creative ways that vintage homes can be modified, expanded and adapted for contemporary living while preserving those distinctive features that give them their architectural and historical value.  These self-guided tours are offered at various times during the year.  Call 310-485-0399 or visit www.smconservancy.org.
