Styrofoam
Banned from Takeout in Santa Monica!
With over 600 food
related establishments to choose from, Santa Monica
is a great place to dine. However, plastic food
service containers have become a major pollutant in
our coastal waters, and across the nation. Now,
Santa Monica stands with other leading cities in
banning Styrofoam®,
plastics marked #6, and other non-recyclable to-go
containers. By providing sustainable to-go
containers we protect the Santa Monica Bay and eat
well. |

Sustainable City
Report Card Released for 2007-
2008
The consensus is that Santa Monica is
working very hard on many levels and in many
sectors to achieve sustainability. The
government, residents and local businesses
are working together to realize Santa
Monica's sustainability goals. The Report Card
reflects this fact. It also highlights
many of the challenges the community faces
in meeting it's ambitious goals - many of
those challenges are regional or national
trends that have particularly long-term
strategies. But, one thing is certain,
Santa Monica is always moving forward.

plan. Where do you fit in? |

Sunday's Farmers'
Market Goes Zero Waste
Ever
eaten a meal and then eaten your utensils? Enjoyed cold water in a cup
made from sugar cane, or coffee in a cup with a soy-based lining instead
of the standard
petroleum lining? While we don’t recommend eating your fork (even though
it is made from corn), we do recommend giving these biodegradable items
a try at the “Zero Waste” Farmers’ Market each Sunday on Main Street. |

Santa Monica
Offers Incentives to Build Green
The City of Santa Monica has long tried
to encourage green building practices.
Now, in addition to financial incentives
for green building, the city has passed
an ordinance that will allow expedited
plan checks for LEED registered
projects. This expediting process may
take weeks off of the approval process.
