Imagine the wide-eyed excitement
of 26 elementary students as older students from
SAMOHI, armed with posters and displays, walked into
their classroom. The high school students are
prepared to teach about recycling and the choices
each person makes every day to help or hurt the
environment. The focus is on school lunches and
packaging. The high school students give their
presentation to a hushed crowd and then ask for
questions. The discussion is lively and older
students leave feeling energized and motivated.
Comments of the younger children ranged from awe
over their new discoveries to the wish to do the
same teaching when they get to high school. |

Peer Partners trains Santa Monica High School
students to give monthly environmental education
in-class presentations to ‘partner’ schools -
SMASH/John Muir Elementary Schools. The high
school students not only become "teachers," but they
learn about local environmental issues, present
themselves as excellent role models, and develop
skills in addressing the public. Peer Partners
is often the first time high school students see
themselves as positive role models. The older
students become mentors and role models for the
younger students in profound and significant ways.
