Portraits of a Neighborhood

Join us on Sunday, December 4 for the Grand Opening
of the new Virginia Avenue Park

On Saturday, November 12, the Pico Farmers’ Market returned to its old, but newly redesigned home in Virginia Avenue Park at 2200 Virginia Avenue. Following two years of extensive construction and renovation, the park is open to the public, and the Saturday market is once again offering fresh, locally-grown produce and other goods in the Pico neighborhood. In anticipation of  Virginia Avenue Park’s scheduled Grand  Opening Festival on Sunday, December 4, the market's homecoming was used to begin crafting "Portraits of Our Neighborhood," a theme that will be carried through the grand opening.

Park visitors brought photos of themselves, their family and friends taken at Virginia Avenue Park over the past 30 years, for incorporation into photo murals that will be on display at the grand opening. A CityTV crew also videotaped visitors’ memories of the park, to be aired on Cable Channel 16 from November 15 to December 5.

A BRIGHTER VIEW FOR NEXT YEAR’S BUDGET

As the new year rolls into view, so does the city’s budget for the fiscal year 2006-07, which must be adopted by City Council next June. While the city’s financial picture is much brighter than it was just a year ago, maintaining a balance between the costs of providing services, facilities and programs to benefit the community and the revenues that support them is always a delicate task given the range of demands on the city’s resources.

Those who live and work in Santa Monica can help the City Council and city
staff as they begin planning for 2006-07, by submitting suggestions and identifying
the services, programs and projects they believe are essential to the city’s continued progress and those that are less important. Members of the public may participate in the public budget hearing at the January 24 Council meeting beginning at 6:45 p.m. in the Council Chamber at City Hall, by mail (attn: City Council, 1685 Main Street, Room 209, Santa Monica 90401), by fax (310-917-6640) or on-line (click on the "Budget Suggestions" link on the Home Page at www.smgov.net).
